god i hate that i was right about this. the “its $70 dlc” people were right
god i need cool/interesting new areas in totk i hope theyre just avoiding visuals of most stuff in order to not spoil it bcus the sky islands rn just seem kinda. idk more of the same. yes the new fuse mechanics and stuff are cool but thats not what im interested in really
#totk probably has to be my biggest disappointment in gaming#everything in that game is so cool when you first discover it and then it wears off incredibly fast#i couldnt even be assed to finish bcus the one really high point in the games plot with the dragon got spoiled for me#look like. i will take the L on expecting a zelda game to have an interesting plot. thats on me for expecting that#but having the story be ‘go find these memories out of order again lmao’ is so.#what makes me mad is theres a few moments in the game like when you first enter the wind temple or dive into the depths for the first time#that are so incredible. but then you realize the depths is basically all the same and is just an inversion of the overworld#and that 90% of the sky islands are copy pasted and the tutorial one is by far the most interesting#like please do not misunderstand me i know that some level of recycled content has to exist in open world games of this scale#otherwise they never get done. but a sequel 5+ years later reusing the same map and then reusing that map again for the depths is so. okay.#dev interview where they were like ‘the depths were created in a surprisingly short amount of time’ yeah it shows lmfao#i’ll give them one thing and thats that they added cave which something i was fiending for when i played botw#but most of the caves arent even that interesting so like#what it boils down to for me is that botw had such fun exploration that basically every open world game after it was mimicking it#(or mimicking the stuff that inspired it) and yet totk exploration is so nothing. no real npcs to speak of in the depths or the sky#no interesting ruins of the zonai. the only story to the depths is the fucking yiga#that statue quest had me hoping there would be a whole new race down there. lmfao#the game is designed as if millions of people didnt play botw and that it still has the same newness factor as botw did#like sorry banjo and kazooie nuts and bolts gameplay does distract me from the fact that the actual new areas are uninteresting as fuck#ik they said in dev interviews that theyre sticking to the open style for the future please god make exploring and finding things fun again

So I finally finished tears of the kingdom and I have thoughts, far too many to encapsulate here, but I'll start.
So I guess we'll start w/ my biggest mechanical problems (I wanna let story stuff stew for a bit) I'll just come out and say it then. I hate the depths they felt tedious and punishing to get through. The sense of joy and discovery that I got from exploring the over world was completely missing. This is probably because of a mix of a lack of natural beauty, no people or towns, and it being Pitch black while everything wanted to kill me.
I can almost understand how it'd be enjoyable from a more challenging point of view, but I could never get into. I'd just become frustrated, take a break, and come back a little later. I always like to get all fast travel points in a game before I get too into it, so I wanted to get all the shrines pretty quickly. Unfortunately, to do that I had to find every light root, which took up a chunk of my game play, making me tire of the game much faster than I otherwise would have.
I'm confused as to why they added the depths to the game. The only thing from it that I actually enjoyed was Master Kogha and Yiga clan, which could've been moved to the caves. Anything of interest in the depths could've easily been moved to the sky island which I feel would've been so much better. The sky islands should've been a much bigger part of the game. After the tutorial island I only went up there when grinding for shrines or chests and they rarely felt like an important part of the world, which I think is a shame for how important they were to the story.
Which leads me to my final point. Where the fuck did the depths come from? Maybe there is an explanation that I just haven't come across or it's set up for the next game like the zonai ruins were in botw, but I can't figure out why it exists. I've heard some theories that it's entirely another realm but then why does it map to the over world. Why doest it maych the over world at all? How did people get in and out of the mine? Why are former Link's stuff down there? Why? How?? What is going on down there? If it's not another dimension how does the world not, like, collapse in on itself?
Overall the depths are a confusing, tedious, unnecessary realm that nearly drove me to tears and I cannot fathom why it exists.
All that to say, I haven't seen anyone else complain about it, so if you liked it please tell me why. I'd genuinely love to know!
#totk#tlz:totk#tears of the kingdom#the legend of zelda: tears of the kingdom#just some thoughts might edit later#ill probably add more things#i still loved the game#i just had a few problems that i thought would be fun to talk about#feel free to discuss#mine#the possum speaks
